School Counseling Collaboration and Consultation The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model requires school counselors to recognize the impact of social, cultural, and environmental factors on the success and circumstances of students. This includes understanding the best ways to establish programs and initiatives in collaboration with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community member to support the academic, personal/social, and career growth of all students (ASCA, 2019). School counselors possess the skills to provide counseling support and strategies to students, as well as develop and implement lessons to educate students, parents, and teachers. Supporting academic and behavioral growth in students is something that school counselors can help through individual counseling, small group counseling, and large group lessons. School counselors can also use their skills and knowledge to share strategies for parents to use at home and for teachers to implement in the classroom. The educational setting where students with disabilities are educated has been a controversial topic for years. An important role of the IEP team is to determine the least restrictive placement where special education services will be delivered to best meet the student’s learning needs. Where a student with a disability receives his or her special education services can have implications for both the learning for that student as well as the other students sharing the same learning environment. In this module’s Discussion, you will develop a strategy that you can implement in collaboration and consultation with teachers and students, to best support the classroom environment in responding to a student’s disability-related behavioral reactions to emotional challenges. Review the document ″Student Profile for Samantha″ and determine how you can support Samantha, her teachers, and her classmates. By Day 3 of Week 8 Post an explanation of a strategy that you can develop to implement with teachers, students, and Samantha during moments when she becomes frustrated or stressed. Describe how you might educate these individuals on the importance of inclusion in your strategy and how it can help everyone in the classroom to be more successful.
