Advocacy Letter

Words: 363
Pages: 2
Subject: Uncategorized

Format:
This assignment should be one to two double-spaced pages in length (300-750 words).
2. Provide an overview, in the first paragraph of your letter, of your position.
3. Identify, in subsequent paragraphs, evidence for your position.
Relate your evidence to objectives, concepts, and terms from class. Provide examples of these to clarify your points.
Instructions:
You will be responsible for writing a “letter” to a teacher, parent, child, family member, community member, elected official or school board member about how the languages and/or language varieties that a child has learned in their home is a precious asset to bring to their classroom. While formulating your letter, consider our discussions around linguistic diversity, language(s) acquisition, language variation, and language in the classroom. Frame your letter around the theme that a teacher is an advocate, creating learning experiences that demonstrate sensitivity, acknowledging students of all abilities and valuing human differences.
Context:
Your advocacy letter will reflect personal discovery and interpretation of pertinent topics related to language use and language development. It should address (1) linguistic diversity and its orientations towards language use and language development in the classroom, (2) how these can be fostered or impeded, and (2) how we can articulate our orientations toward equity for linguistically diverse students.
Purpose:
As professionals, good teachers reflect on factors that can influence student success and consider ways to advocate for their students. This activity is designed with three main purposes:
(1) reflect on how language diversity, as one form of human difference, is enacted, supported, or devalued in the classroom;
(2) consider how orientations towards linguistically diverse learners can support or impede language development and student success;
(3) articulate ways to advocate for linguistically diverse students to stakeholders (teachers, parents, students, family members, community members, school board, etc.)
