1. Goal: For this assignment, you will practice your observation skills (a) in real-life settings and (b) with chosen pre-recorded videos. 10-hours of observations is a course requirement. You will conduct 5 hours of observations in conjunction with the deep and thoughtful work you will engage in with the course content throughout the semester2. Hints and Tips for Observations:1) Make your observations in real time. Meaning, don’t stop the video to write things down. You won’t be able to freeze time in real life to make observations. You will miss things and that’s ok right now. This just gives you some practice. You will get better over time.2) If there’s a lot happening, focus on one person (e.g., a teacher, a student) for the entire observation. You can also switch your focus during the observation but it often helps to have a focus.3) If there’s too much happening to write down what you observe and your interpretation, it’s ok to jot down some interpretations afterwards. For the purposes of this assignment, do not spend more than 10 minutes after a 45-minute observation writing your interpretations.4) You can do this on the computer or on printed paper and then upload. Whatever is best, easiest, and most accessible for you.5) I have added a classroom observation form with a time increments column in case it helps you to keep track of your observations in blocks of time. Typically time increments serve your observation purpose and they vary depending on what and why you are observing. For the purposes of this assignment, you could use two-minute time increments. I started it for you as an example.6) Make sure to put start and end times are on your observation sheets. Also, make sure to note the activity, classroom, and/or video (when applicable) so that I know what you are observing (all information at the top of each form).7) Use a new sheet for each class period, activity, video you observe to help you complete your observations and stay organized.3. GuidelinesPart 1 ) Two hours of in- person observation of non-school space+ Choose a socially-distanced, safe indoor or outdoor place to conduct this observation. Complete the General (out of school) Observation Guide for the duration of the observation. Be sure to note start and stop times.+You can observe your family members, roommates, housemates, and/or pets. If you have a window, you can sit inside and observe what’s happening outside (e.g., people walking by, cars driving by, birds flying by). There does not have to be constant action and motion but some way to practice the art of observing while taking notes of your observations.Part 2) Three hours of classroom observations. These could be video observations of classroom space(s) from the list of videos provided for you on Canvas and/or live classroom observations (in-person or on Zoom). The total observation hours must equal 3.+ Videos (in case you do not have a classroom to observe in-person or on Zoom):1.
