Discussion: Challenges of Data Analysis The process of data analysis involves making sense out of text and image data. It involves preparing the data for analysis, conducting different analyses, moving deeper and deeper into understanding the data (some qualitative researchers like to think of this as peeling back the layers of an onion), representing the data, and making an interpretation of the larger meaning of the data. (Creswell, 2009, p.183) Regardless of the type of data—qualitative, quantitative, or mixed—the data analysis process is a complex series of steps. Each step requires the evaluator to critically analyze and address the alignment between each of the steps noted in the quotation. While this complex, multifaceted process may yield significant findings and bring positive implications for an evaluation, its nature also increases the potential for challenges. From threats to validity to flaws in the instrumentation, challenges are an inherent part of data analysis. As an evaluator it is vital to be aware of potential challenges, as this allows you to be prepared with strategies to meet those challenges. In the Discussion, you analyze potential challenges of the data analysis. In particular, you analyze anticipated challenges related to data sources and statistical methods of analysis for your program evaluation plan. Additionally, you collaborate with your colleagues in selecting and developing strategies for mitigating anticipated challenges. To prepare for this Discussion, review the Learning Resources and consider the challenges associated with analyzing data. Then, consider the challenges you anticipate from the data sources you have selected for your program evaluation. Also, consider the challenges you anticipate from the statistical methods of analysis you selected for the proposed data. Next, think about strategies you may implement to mitigate these challenges. Part 1 By Day 3, Week 8 Post an explanation of the challenges you would anticipate facing with data analysis for your program evaluation. In your post, describe specific challenges with data sources as well as with the statistical methods of analysis you selected. Cite Learning Resources to support your reasoning. Part 2 By Day 7, Week 8 Post an explanation of strategies that you would use to mitigate the challenges presented in your first post. Provide a rationale to support the strategies you select, including citations to the Learning Resources and other peer-reviewed journal articles.
