This final paper promotes integrative thinking. You will align perspectives of the two disciplinary approaches you chose to research for your social problem. Describe how the integration of perspectives is possible through the identification of common and aligned perspectives represented by the disciplines. Instructions Step 1: The focus of this final paper will be on the 2 disciplines and 4 articles you used for your Integrated Bibliography and Map Assignment. Step 2: Please conduct integrative analysis for the final paper with the sections listed below. Step 3: Formatting of paper: Use 12 point font, double-space, 1-inch margins, cite all authors, and have a bibliography. Write in full sentences following formal writing rules. Rewrite in your own words. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE from internet sources, class/peer sources, or other sources. Plagiarism will result in a failed grade. This final paper will have an introduction, part 1 – map, part 2, part 3, and conclusion. More information on paper sections below: INTRODUCTION (15 points): Explain and describe the social problem and restate the problem statement. Define each discipline and discuss each discipline’s assumptions as it relates to your social problem. If applicable, include any other disciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts from course modules. Introduces the main points made in your paper and show the reader what to anticipate in the rest of the paper. PART 1 (10 points) – Map of Interdisciplinary Connections: THIS IS JUST YOUR FINALIZED MAP (after your group’s feedback) – An image of the map can be inserted into your paper. PART 2 (25 points) Using the 2 disciplinary perspectives and 4 articles from your Integrated bibliography and map, provide a summary of attributes that each discipline contributes to understanding the problem. Make sure to discuss and cite the 4 articles. What is each discipline’s contribution to understanding the problem? What are the strengths and limitations of each disciplinary approach to the problem? Be very specific and provide examples. Back up points with evidence from sources and citations. Identify and describe the variables the authors utilized and connect them to the disciplinary assumptions. Justify why an outcome or variable is sociology, political science, or economics. The map will have many of these variables. What has each discipline missed in terms of relevant concepts and issues? PART 3: Integrative Solutions (30 points) Expose possibilities: How does this exercise inform a more holistic approach to understanding the problem? First, discuss how integrating the two disciplines can reveal more comprehensive perspective. For instance, identify unique disciplinary contributions each brings to the table that adds to the expansive understanding of the social problem. Include specific examples or evidence from your four articles. How is it significant to your interdisciplinary understanding of the social problem? In addition, referencing your map, explain where common ground exists and how a balance of perspectives is possible. For example, you may find that many points on the map are common. Pull out 2- 3 important examples of common points of interests, concepts, or variables within the research, describe how the disciplines use them in complimentary ways. Be descriptive and thorough in your analysis. Support what you are writing by citing all authors. What conclusions do you draw from your mapping exercise? How would you counsel the authors in expanding their positions to provide a more complete understanding of the problem? CONCLUSION (15 points): Clearly summarize the main points made in the paper. What are the benefits of interdisciplinary perspectives versus disciplinary perspectives for your social problem? Also, explore ways in which the common ground discussed above could present opportunities for solutions to the problem. Identify one or two possible solutions that are informed by an interdisciplinary perspective generated in Part 3.
