Fieldwork Task 2 Historic Building: Portfolio An historic building 500 words (plus sketches) This task involves not only visiting a place, but also doing some small sketches of architectural features to help you really notice the details that date buildings. You can also take photos but the sketches are important. (Hint: use a ruler – most buildings are variations of squares) You will not be marked on the quality of your artwork – only on what you observed and put into your rough sketch. Visit a heritage building, such as Old Government House Parramatta. Your task is to look at the building (not the displays or furnishings). The building materials, design and architectural features help us establish the date of buildings. Answer these questions (in words as well as with sketches): a. What is the building? b. What are the walls made of? Sketch the pattern of brickwork, stonework or timber. c. Look at the windows. What is the size of the panes of glass? Sketch a window. d. What is the shape of the roof and what is it made of? Sketch the roof shape. e. The roof shape is often best seen from a distance from the front of the building. I will provide the images for you to do the drawing sketches and answer the questions please note they have to be your own words and sketches by hand. Below I will also provide with some information regarding the building: but do not copy word by word this is just a rough idea for you of what the building is about. 1. The history of old government house situated on the traditional lands of the Burramatta Darug, World Heritage listed Old Government House is the oldest surviving public building in Australia. 2. It is built by convicts, it became the decision-making centre of the colony and served as the ‘country residence’ for the first ten Governors of Australia. 3. The construction of the building started: 1815 and opened: 1820. Go inside the building and select one room. Comment on the purpose of the room, number of windows, size of room, other features such as width of floor boards, skirting boards, ceiling, fireplace, window shutters. Do you know the date of the building? Add any other information about the building that you observed, such as its grounds (referred to as curtilage in heritage documents), outbuildings, servants’ rooms, cellar. You may include other information about the building but the main task is to observe and notice details by sketching them. Scan or photograph your drawings and attach them to the document. Note: References are required for all non-observed information and background details obtained from published or online sources. Chicago style. Please be mindful of the word limit I asked and keep it at that extent only 100 more words above is allowed. The main purpose of these tasks is to make personal observations, You certainly should do a bit of background research on the (building etc). The volume and quality of material may vary widely according to what you focus on. As ever you should provide references for any details gained from any other source such as guidebooks. I provided the images for you to do the hand in hand sketches.
