The author, Peter Cozzens, aims to correct certain narratives that have been widely accepted as truthful by the general population even hundreds of years later. According to Cozzens, Native Americans were completely outnumbered, had little to no technology, and ultimately very little power. As the United States as we know it today continued to expand after the Civil War, it completely overtook the Native American people who had so few resources at their disposal. While certain accounts of this takeover had originally painted the United States army as heroes for defeating and taking over these “savage” villages of people, it is now understood that what they really were doing would be classified today as ethnic cleansing. This is obviously a terrible part of U.S. history. However, Cozzens also notes that while the army was carrying out these awful acts, there were many who participated who actually sympathized with the experience of Native Americans and felt that the way they were treated was unfair and wrong. They witnessed Native Americans be starved, cut off from supplies, be forced to fight, and ultimately be killed in the conflict. Additionally, it was not uncommon for different Native American tribes to have conflict with one another and there were even accounts of certain groups joining forces with the army in order to defeat their rival tribes.
