1) Before reading the article, think about your own recycling and composting behavior (or lack thereof). List and briefly explain three factors that might make people more likely to recycle and compost, and three factors that might make people less likely to recycle or compost. Then, write one of those factors as a specific, testable hypothesis and, in about a paragraph, describe an experimental or observational study you could do to test it. Note: This question is not based on the paper. It is just about you thinking through the question and applying the scientific process.

2) In the DiGiacomo paper Download the DiGiacomo paper , what variable(s) did the authors hypothesize would affect residents’ likelihood of recycling and composting? Explain what effect they thought the variable would have and why they thought so. Then, briefly describe the two studies they did. Make sure to indicate whether these were experimental, observational or modeling studies and to clearly explain how the experimental design of each study related to the author’s hypotheses.

3) Explain what is being shown in Figure 5. Why do you think the authors show the mass of compost per bedroom rather than per person, per apartment, or per floor? How large and statistically significant were the differences between “Inconvenient” and “More convenient” vs. “Inconvenient” and “Most convenient”? What explanation do the authors offer for this pattern?

4) Imagine that the management of an apartment building learns about this paper’s results and decides to put a compost bin in the hallway near each apartment, thus changing all the units in the apartment building from the “Longer Distance – 97 ft” condition to the “Hallway – 5 ft” condition. On average, how much more food waste would you expect each person in this building to put in the compost bin rather than the trash each week? If the apartment building has 300 residents, how much food waste could be composted instead of going to the landfill in one year?

5) Based on the results of this paper, make a specific recommendation about how American University could increase composting by students, faculty, and/or staff on campus. Write about a paragraph explaining how your recommendation could be implemented, why you think it would work, and, if possible, how much you would expect it to reduce food waste.
