Each student is to submit a 3,000 to 5,000 word essay, double spaced, on a topic covered in this class.
Students may choose any topic, issue or moral dilemma covered in this course in the textbooks, in the
class videos lectures, or from the Forum Questions. The essay topic needs to be pre-approved by the
instructor and the essay itself needs
1) to set out the moral/ethical issues and its historical background (identifying and defining the
issue is an essential part of this assignment).
2) to list any judicial and/or legislative decisions that create any legal obligations or rights,
3) to set out personal reflections on the moral justification for the present state of the issue
(these need to include identifying the ethical principles involved in the issue that were
discussed in this course),
4) to show that the student has researched and correctly cited the relevant judicial and/or
legislative decisions, and has correctly identified and cited at least three scholarly articles or
books on this issue, and
5) the essay will be typed, and include citations and bibliography, correctly using Chicago
Style.
Essay Grading: The grade for this essay will be assessed using the five criteria listed above.
Essays MUST be prepared in MS Word and conform to all the
other format requirements as set out in the syllabus. Each essay submitted for grading needs to have
the words “FINAL DRAFT” on the cover page and must be uploaded by the due date.
It is each student’s responsibility to prepare and submit their essay or paper on time.
