Write a research paper on the France Algeria Conflict HISTORIOGRAPHY.Here are the instructions: What a historiography paper is: A historiography paper does not focus on finding and interpreting new primary source. Instead, it looks at the development of historical writing (secondary sources) on a particular topic. Thus it will help develop the important skills of critical reading and writing. Focusing on the writings of historians, you will analyze and evaluate the various interpretations of and approaches to your particular topic. Your paper must make an argument about the interpretations and approaches of historians, not directly about the “history” of your topic. The Assignment: 1. You should use a minimum of 15 sources for this paper. 2. You will begin your historiographical essay with a thesis about the topic you have chosen. The thesis is the central approach your own research on this topic would take were you actually writing your comps on this topic. 3. Next you will introduce your sources and describe their authors’ perspectives and their main points of agreement/disagreement. Think carefully about how to organize this section. Can you group the various historians you have looked at into a few different approaches? 4. Then, in the body of your paper you will elaborate upon and develop the agreements and disagreements by pulling out specific points of agreement/disagreement, juxtaposing quotes (and/or paraphrasing arguments) and subjecting them to analysis as you go along. As you do so ask (and answer) why you think the authors of your various sources disagree. 5. In your conclusion, you will briefly summarize your findings and, more importantly, assess the credibility of your various sources, and specify which one(s) you find to be most compelling, and why. The conclusion should go beyond the points you make in your thesis and introduction. 6. Your paper must be a minimum of 4500 words long. Topic: The historiography essay must concern an issue in world history that relates to questions of colonialism or the global structure of modernity in some way. In other words, it cannot simply be a topic that fits within a single national historiography. It can, however, reframe a topic that has been treated mainly as a topic within a single nation by showing how a more global view of the topic changes the way we understand the topic. You may want to begin talking to your instructor early in February to discuss your choice. Here are some examples: why the industrial revolution happened primarily in Europe; the role of India’s colonization in the development of the British Empire; the global silver trade in the 16th and 17th centuries; the development of a particular aspect of the Cold War; decolonization and the global 1960s; the role of the environment in the development of the British Empire; the transformation of Indian Ocean trade in the 15th and 16th centuries. Abstract: The abstract is a descriiptive summary (a long paragraph) that informs the reader of your topic and your basic thesis. (For example, you could tell us that three basic approaches have developed to your topic over time. Give us a basic summary of those approaches, how they developed in relation to each other, and what is the basis of the disagreement between them.) Abstracts will be graded. Annotated Bibliography: At least fifteen sources. The sources you use for this paper are secondary sources about your topic, and they should be a mix of books and articles. Make sure to search various databases in the library in order to find your sources. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents that are pertinent to a particular topic. In this case it will revolve around the works you will analyze in your historiography essay. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. In other words, tell us why this source should be included in your paper, what it is about, and give us a critical appraisal of the work. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Bibliographies will be graded. Bibliographic information should be in Chicago Manual of Style format. Rough Draft: The best writing happens when we rewrite. Therefore, the more complete your rough draft is, the more you will be able to fine tune your writing for the final draft. Rough drafts will be graded. I will look for three things. You must have a clear and strong thesis. You must have at least 10 pages of writing. And you should have a clear and logical organization. Annotated bibliography with feedback attached. All sources downloaded already attached. I want main argument to be that there are three basic ways of looking at the conflict: France’s side tries to erase most of their wrongdoings. Algerian or even postcolonial side which tries to show how they have been persecuted and how France is the oppressor. A mixed world view that shows the nuance and that both parties are at fault. Argument also must be made on how the focus should be on improving future relations and not being stuck on the past.
