Please answer all 4 questions using complete sentences. You may not use the same example more than once. “Example” here means a work of art or visual culture. Your examples must be derived from course materials (i.e., Book – The Power of Art-Richard Lewis and Susan Lewis 3rd edition and “Art in the News,” ).

1. With reference to four examples, each from a different historical period*, discuss the various ways in which art and/or visual culture have been mobilized in the service of social change or to raise awareness about a specific social/political issue.
*Please note: “Historical Period” can mean “Baroque,” “Enlightenment,” “Victorian,” etc. or, more generally, “Early 19th Century,” “Mid 19thCentury,” “Late 19th Century,” etc.
2. With reference to four examples, each in a different medium (e.g., painting, drawing,
sculpture, video, installation, craft, murals, graffiti, or other forms of visual culture etc.), discuss how art and/or visual culture have sparked controversy. Consider, too, the significance of the medium in each case.

3. With reference to four examples, discuss the various ways in which art and/or visual culture have helped shape our understanding of historical processes, eras, or events (e.g., war, conflict, crises, natural or human-made disasters, etc.).
4. Select four examples that you think best illustrate the following powers: 1. To engage technological or scientific developments; 2. To communicate OR challenge the power of leaders; 3. To evoke a strong emotional response; and 4. To change beliefs.
