1) To what extend do you think that Schuylers assessment of the overall situation of Blacks is in agreement with Hughes depiction of upper-middle class Blacks? One seems to view this urge to whiteness as a negative, as selling out, while the other sees it simply as a natural and common-sensical response to 300-years in America.
2) Do you agree or disagree with Hughes interpretation of the meaning behind the young poet saying he wants to be known as a poet, not a Negro poet? Why or why not? Does it seem contemporary or way out of date? Might an artist of today, (not only a black artist, but possibly a Latina/o, Asian, Arab) make a similar claim? Music may provide some examples.
