In the past several years, all of the steel mills in the greater Midvale area have closed due to competition with overseas steel production. The overseas firms are able to produce steel of high quality, but for far less money than their American counterparts. Consequently, Midvale is suffering massive unemployment and conditions of economic instability. Apart from steel production, Midvale is noted for its large and beautiful, wildlife preserve. Thousands of tourists visit this sanctuary each year, which results in significant revenues for Midvale residents. Statistics indicate that this tourism will actually increase in the coming years.
Myocat Industries is a Japanese corporation, which manufactures cars, tractors, lawn equipment and farm machinery. In the past, all of Myocat products were manufactured in Japan then exported to the United States. This is a costly means of distributing these goods. Consequently, Myocat has decided to assemble all of their American products in the United States using parts, which are manufactured in Japan. In searching for a suitable location for their American assembly plant, Myocat has decided that Midvale is an ideal site. There exists a ready work force in Midvale, and Midvale’ s proximity to seaports and airports would make the receiving of parts and the distribution of finished products most affordable.
However, the only land suitable for the proposed Myocat Industrial Park is located within the Midvale Wildlife Preserve. Approximately, 25% of the total sanctuary would be needed for this complex. Myocat has made it clear that if this site were not made available, they would look to another location entirely: Smallville. Located on the west coast, Smallville is most eager to receive this assembly plant. Yet, Midvale is still Myocat’s first choice. Consequently, the citizens of Midvale will vote on this issue at an open town meeting Should Myocat be allowed to build on the wildlife preserve’s land despite the potential loss in tourism and the effect this action may have upon the wildlife?
PROBLEM:
Assume that you are the Public Relations/Information officer for either Myocat Corporation or, Friends of Midvale’ s Wildlife Preserve (a citizen action group which is dedicated to preventing Myocat’ s proposed project). Further, assume that you are to deliver a speech, which represents your organization’ s point of view at the open town meeting.
Your speech should be approximately 3 to 5 minutes in length and may not be complimented by any visual aids. It goes without saying that your speech should be persuasive in nature. You must submit to me two items: a one Page outline of your speech and the actual text of the speech. In making your case you may fabricate any reasonable data that you believe to be relevant.
