Unit 5 Exercise
Think of a particular group to which you belong. This can be a classroom project group, a work group, a group of friends, a family, a church group, social club, athletic team or any other group where the members see each other frequently and have some effects on the feelings or behavior of each other.

1. Which of the following behaviors are acceptable? Check those that are appropriate.
_____Talking about very personal information
_____Openly disagreeing with another member’s remarks
_____Hugging another group member
_____Openly disagreeing with the leader
_____Drinking alcohol when with the group
_____Missing a group event without a good reason
You probably found easy to answer these questions, and you might be able to think of another group where some of the answers might be different. If there is general agreement about what is and is not acceptable in the group, this reflects group norms.

2. In which of the following ways do members act differently? Check those that apply.
_____How much they talk
_____How much they give opinions and suggestions
_____How much they provide support for other members
_____How much they try to resolve frictions between other members
_____How much they influence group decisions

If members differ in how they behave, this reflects roles in the group. Some people may take on leadership roles or focus on pushing their ideas while others may be more concerned with getting along with everyone and resolving frictions in the group.

3. Are some members more highly regarded or more powerful than other members?
_____Yes, there are big status differences
_____No, all members are equals

Status refers to how highly regarded people are in the group. Some groups, such as the military, sports teams, work groups, and some families may have big status differences. Some people may be treated with more respect and they may be able to exert a disproportionate amount of control over the group. Other groups regard members as equals and each person has a relatively equal say in group decisions.

4. Which of these statements would describe your group?
_____We are united
_____We like to spend time with each other
_____We are committed to the group
_____This group is very important to us

These items reflect group cohesiveness (cohesion). Cohesive groups are important to the members. Members of cohesive groups participate more actively in group activities, are more influenced by group members, and are more likely to reach group goals (which could be to be very productive or to have a good time).

5. What type of goals do the group members have?
_____They all work together to achieve a common goal
_____Each member has his or her own personal goals that don’t involve other members

Cooperative goals tend to lead to more cohesion. If the task can be divided and each person can work independently, individual goals may be appropriate. If the task requires members to share tools, equipment, or information or to work in a coordinated manner with others, a cooperative goal is better. For example, a track team may do well individual goals, but a volleyball team should have group goals.

Based on your answers to these questions and your general feelings about your group, write a two-page double-spaced paper to describe the various aspects of your group’s structure. Include your thoughts about the norms, roles, status system, cohesion, and goals of your group. Are there any facets of your group’s structure that you think are particularly appropriate? Are there facets that you think are inappropriate?

Turn in your paper using the Dropbox. Label the paper “Group Structure Exercise” and be sure to include your name.
