Background
For this section, students are expected to incorporate feedback from their instructor on their
midterm and further hone their analysis to focus on one specific population that is affected by the
social welfare concern. This section includes:
1. A brief overview of the social welfare concern, including the current scope and impact,
focused on the chosen impacted population.
2. Using course concepts, explain how this concern constitutes a form of injustice (e.g.,
human rights, economic, environmental) and, using an intersectional framework, consider
the relevant structural factors that contribute to the disproportionate impact on a specific
population.
3. Trace the history of the concern as it relates to the specific affected population, including
the historical involvement of the social work profession, citing specific examples of how
their work not only led to positive change but also exacerbated unjust conditions for
vulnerable populations.
Analysis
1. Identify at least two social policies that have either contributed to the perpetuation of the
social injustice or that were enacted to address the social injustice.
2. Using a policy analysis framework, discuss potential gaps, critiques, or unintended
consequences of the policies you identified.
3. Identify communities and/or organizations that have responded to address the social
injustice.
4. Explore the specific strategies and tactics used by the organization and/or community,
considering gaps and critiques of these efforts.
Intervention
1. Identify an anti-oppressive community or organizational practice opportunities for social
workers in order to fortify, augment, or complement current social change efforts.
Reflection
1. Discuss how your social identities , values, AND how your role as a social worker may
impact:
a. Your ability to engage with the community of focus,
b. The effectiveness of your proposed practice strategies.
This paper should be eight to 10 pages, substantially integrate at least eight sources, including at
least 5 outside sources (peer reviewed or gray literature that are not included in the syllabus), and
adhere to proper APA formatting (7th ed.). Please be sure to cite the legislation that you are
analyzing.
