How hard/difficult to run a business operation in the United States
•Observatory of Economic Complexity (https://oec.world/) •“Index of Economic Freedom,” Heritage Foundation (https://www.heritage.org/index/?version=6) •“Doing Business,” World Bank (https://www.doingbusiness.org/) Scenario: You are on a scouting mission to evaluate a prospective location for a new regional production facility for your manufacturing company, which makes heavy equipment for construction (you compete globally with companies like Caterpillar and Komatsu). Your company would also like to use this production base as a regional distribution center, to export your products to nearby countries. Your boss is asking you to write a preliminary report addressing these primary concerns: •How easy/difficult is it to establish a business operation in the United States? •Does this country already produce and trade in this industry or in related industries? •Does this country have adequate institutions to support a successful global business? •Would the company be better off locating in a nearby country instead? Assignment: Your objective is to respond to your boss’s request with a two-to-three page, single-spaced report that addresses the questions above, as well as any other pertinent findings you discover. You are not making the final decision on location (or anything else), but you are providing important input into the company decision – your recommendation, if it is well-written and substantiated, will help guide corporate strategy.
