History of Human Nutrition-Body Image and Dieting Handbill Purpose: Identify and research a historical component of dieting, body image or eating patterns. Communicate the information using a common historical medium-advertising handbills Procedure: 1) Identify a product or treatment developed prior to 1980 designed to alter an individual’s weight or body shape. The product can be related to fashion, body building or dieting (can still be in use but materials should reflect the product at the time of initial development) Possible topics include: (these are examples only and other topics can be used) Liposuction, gastric bypass, corsets, Fletcherism, Atkins diet, Byron’s vinegar and water diet or tapeworm diet 2) Review actual handbills from the period of time the product you are researching was marketed. The handbill you develop must be an original document and not copied from existing materials. See Canvas for examples of handbills. 3) Utilize online and historical sources to research the product or treatment. 4) Develop an advertising handbill including the pertinent information on the product or treatment. Design the handbill in a format that is similar to handbills produced in the timeframe of the product. Include: Product name, founder/inventor, basic premises and benefits of the product/treatment and a disclaimer with the risks and actual impact of the product/treatment. 5) On a separate paper, cite all references using APA citation style with all website and journal references used.
