What lessons do the book, The Handmaid’s Tale and the film, Children of Men offer on this topic? What insights do you now have to survive a dystopian future or present? Write a paper comparing and contrasting the worlds portrayed in the book and the film and the lessons offered by the two texts to grapple with and confront a dystopian existence. To add depth to your comparison, you will use scholarly articles that critique or interpret the novel and film. You could also use scholarly articles that discuss a particular subject that the texts explore; for example, you may look up dystopian elements in cinema and novels, or you could research the political and social events that inspired the texts, etc. Please do not use book or movie reviews—these are not scholarly sources. A successful approach to this essay is to compare elements (characters, setting, conflicts, symbols, etc.) from the novel and the film in order to examine how these two works are similar and different in their exploration of a common theme. The essay must conform to MLA guidelines and include a Works Cited page. You must have between three to five secondary sources for this paper.
