Requirement of this research note: You are required to write one research note. Ideas for topics are basically surrounded by the course content(next paragraph and in additional materials), something within the infrastructure. Students may wish to turn in drafts or outlines for discussion a few weeks prior to the final date. The point of the note is to present a particular topic of current interest in a clear and succinct fashion for digestion by policymakers or their advisors. The key to a good note is to cover the relevant arguments and facts, tightly argued without repetition and in a manner that is intuitive. Supporting diagrams, pictures or tables should be used as appropriate. To get to a good note it is typically necessary to do lots of background work. Then there tends to be enough material to write a really interesting short note. There is a strict word limit of 2500 on a note and a length of at least 1600 words is acceptable when complemented by useful graphs or diagrams.Summary of the course content: The course provides a comprehensive treatment of policy issues arising in the organization and regulation of infrastructure ranging from regulation of market structure, choices of ownership (and partnerships), and regulation of market conduct to implications for finance. Most examples are drawn from telecommunications, electricity, transport, and water.
