1. Carefully select, describe and explain why you chose these tools for YOUR proposed study:
Study design (true/quasi experimental, non-experimental, etc.)
Sampling method (simple random, etc.)
You will be graded
on the appropriateness of your selections, and how legitimately they support each other (e.g., don’t use surveys for true experimental research)
on how well you explain the method (be brief though!)
on the clarity and parsimony of your writing
2. Submit your saved SPSS file and screen shots of the SPSS file* you created and saved per these instructions, the attached PDF & recorded video:
1) Download and install SPSS on your computer
2) Using the “Variable View” tab create a new file with these four variables: Age, Gender, Ethnicity, and Educational Attainment
a) Set up these aspects for each of the four variables: “Name”, “Label”, “Value” and select the correct “Measure”
IMPORTANT NOTE: For “Values” for Gender, Ethnicity and Educational Attainment, operationalize the variables for YOUR study. For some of you, this may mean being more granular with ethnicity or educational attainment (e.g., for my research, I need to be granular about gender). Deciding these “value labels” and how to order is part of “operationalizing” your variable – you are defining the attribute set that will be use to ‘observe’ variation in your variable. Be sure that I can see how you’ve operationalized your varibles using the “vlaue label” in your screen shots.
P.S. I know that not everyone’s study is interested in all these demographic variables – but this is the easiest way to get you into setting up variables in SPSS.
