Art in Context:
Write a 4-5 page paper (double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman) that accomplishes the following tasks:
Explain why each of your three chosen artists’ (Massaccio, Titian, Holbein)works represents one of the three phases of Renaissance art(Early Renaissance, High Renaissance, Northern Renaissance) that we discussed in class. Prove your argument with discussion of style, technique and composition. Make sure your explanation shows the differences among the three phases.
Identify and summarize relevant socio-cultural features of the works, the economic conditions of their production, and the political structures of the time and place.
Connect persons, items, and elements in the artworks to their historical context. Demonstrate these connections with historical evidence.
Attach your chosen paintings in an appendix (does not count towards the 4-5 page limit).
Early Renaissance: Massaccio (specific paintings: Payment of the Tribute of Money, The Trinity)
High Renaissance: Titian (specific paintings: Portrait of Charles V on horseback, The Assumption of the Virgin)
Northern Renaissance” Holbein, Hans the Younger( specific paintings: The Ambassadors, King Henry VIII
