For this essay, we will be analyzing intertextual representations of Ovid’s story of Philomela across three texts: Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, South Park’s “Mr. and Mrs. Tenorman Chili” scene, and the assassination of Walder Frey in Game of Thrones.
Using a feminist critical lens, and with your knowledge of the story of Philomela, consider the following questions and write a short essay:
1. How does each “text” in this set re-cast or re-represent the story of Philomela (that is, in each text, who gets to perpetuate the violence in these stories, who are the victims of the violence, what similarities and differences are there between the three referential texts, and the original story)?
2. What does the Game of Thrones scene accomplish that the other two “texts” did not?
3. What can the intertextual representations in each “text” tell us specifically about those texts, in a critical feminist analysis?
