“DO NOT USE THE WORD GUIDANCE COUNSELOR ” dated term-
You are to arrange a time with a, middle school counselor for a two-hour job shadow and interview. The purpose of the job shadow is to gain insight and understanding of what the job of a counselor entails.
Try to seek information about the following:
Ask about the primary duties or focus of the counselors job. Does he or she have a chance to work with students either individually or in groups? (BOTH) Does the counselor follow the ASCA National Model? (YES) Why or why not?
Ask about how confidentiality issues and if the counselor had to disclose confidential information in order to protect someone from harm.
Ask about their use of data or if/how their job has changed over the years.
Ask if he or she or other counselors have the opportunity to affect change within the school setting. Provide an example, if possible.
Ask about the school demographics and any specific challenges of working with diverse populations. If the link does not work, the population is predominantly hispanic and lowincome, so much so that all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

What are the major the social and emotional issues that children or adolescents are experiencing and how the counselor works with these issues.
What challenges has the counselor experienced in dealing with ethical and legal issues within the job.

{*This counselor job is basically does it all, greet students at the gate in the morning, handles disciple, walk late kids to class, assist teachers, provide lunch assistance, has to be visible when students are out during passing periods.
