Examine the work of art first. Write a list of details and anything else that sticks out at you. Use the vocabulary and other information from the modules to assist you in putting your thoughts on paper. Then, after you examine the work of art – begin your writing. Refer to earlier modules on MLA format at citations. Artist Essay 6 PARAGRAPH OUTLINE (Paper will be in essay form) 8-10 FULL Sentences are required within each paragraph. 1 – Introduction: Need to find a hook to bring the reader in. What is your Thesis What are you going to discuss in your paper, so the reader as a vague knowledge of where you are going with your writing. You need to make sure to list five things, so the reader knows exactly which artwork you are writing about: Artist Name Title of the piece The year it was made What type of medium or mediums were used to create this artwork Dimensions (Height is always given first followed by width) since we live in the United States, please give all measurements in inches. Example; 23 x 14 inches OR 23” x 14” both are OK. (H x W x D) if it is three-dimensional artwork. Describe the genre (Kind or type of work). Provide a general description. *Have a good transition sentence.* 2 – Visual Elements: Discuss only those visual elements that are in your artwork you have chosen. WHAT is shown in the work of art? Include all aspects of what you see. Describe what you see in that work of art so that someone who cannot see that work of art can get a mental image of it based on your description. Each paragraph must contain a clear topic sentence and supporting details, all relating to the thesis. Unity and Variety Balance Emphasis and Focal Point Rhythm Scale Proportion *Have a good transition sentence.* 4 – Iconography: Iconography is the study of subject matter, signs, symbols within the work of art. All of the iconography should be detailed for the reader to understand. *Have a good transition sentence.* 5 – Opinion/Impact Each paragraph must contain a clear topic sentence and supporting details, all relating to the thesis. What is your interpretation of this work of art? What are your lasting thoughts? Do you like or dislike the piece and why How does this artwork make you feel Does it remind you of another artwork you have seen *Have a good transition sentence.
