**INSTRUCTION**
Kristen Anderson concludes our textbook on page 109 with a paradox: that “the United States of the twenty-first century is becoming ever more diverse. …” At the same time “Instead of seeing immigrants as part of the promise of America, they have become a threat against which America needs to be safeguarded, protected and secured.” Anderson leaves us with the following hope: “In time, perhaps this contemporary nativism will give way to a renewed appreciation of the major role immigrants have played in American history.”
