As a result of the National Organ Transplant Act, payments to a live donor or to the cadaveric family of a kidney or other organ donor are illegal in the United States. Do you agree with this federal policy? Should an individual be permitted to receive valuable consideration in return for their kidney donation? If compensation for kidney donation should be permitted, what should the compensation mechanism or market look like? That is, who should provide compensation to the seller? Do you envision a single price paid by the government to all donors, or should a decentralized market reveal the equilibrium price?
