Overview Instruction:
You can do deeper research on an issue we’ve covered in class and write an 8-10 page paper on the subject. You should cite your sources according to the rules found in the Chicago Manual of Style, using footnotes. Your paper should follow one of the following two formats:
2A) You can write comparative review outlining the main arguments of an assigned reading in comparison with a scholarly book or a group of no less than 3 scholarly articles. Your paper should ask and attempt to answer such questions as: What are the differing perspectives of the authors? What assumptions do they share? Where might they disagree and why? Where do you stand? Your choice for additional title(s) to review should be included in your proposal.
Professor’s Personal Feedback from proposal:
Very nice topic and good sources! To do a paper, the key thing to draw out will be how the historians disagree or agree (for example, on the most important changes, why these changes occurred, etc). I am interested in you analyzing the historical narratives as well as looking at the changes of the time period. I think in this case some things you can look for are whether the author thinks sciences comes into or moves out from the Ottoman Empire (what way influence moves), and whether they think this changes over time (is there a narrative of “decline” of the Ottoman Empire, or a critique of the “decline narrative”) I’m looking forward to this!
Note: If more information is needed to cover the required information above, more sources could be added, however, it MUST be considered a credible “scholarly source” and MUST also be cited as instructed. Thank you.
