COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this interdisciplinary course, we will trace the early modern period (1450 – 1800) in Europe, where a variety of factors — printing and the access to books, geographic exploration and colonization, the scientific revolution, Reformation theology, Renaissance Humanism, and the Enlightenment — led Europeans to transform and redefine themselves, their culture, their society, their politics, and their thinking about religion. We will explore this process of “modern” redefinition of human values and study how and reflect upon the changes in intellectual and cultural life it occasioned. We will read from the works of major figures from this period, including Machiavelli, Erasmus, Luther, Calvin, Copernicus, Galileo, Shakespeare, Locke, Voltaire, and Rousseau.
