Successful essays will include (see the instruction in Canvas to support these essay goals – notice this is the rubric – see below for point values) an introduction that both engages the reader and provides context for your thesis and the body of your essay (see 7.2a). a thesis statement that unif‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌ies and captures the main ideas of your essay (so you are working to classify/connect/unify your ideas rather than listing them – see 7.2b). four body paragraphs that support the thesis statement (from 6.4) and are well developed using the deductive PIE paragraph framework (see 7.1c). a conclusion that reinforces (rather than repeats) the main ideas of the essay and then offers a big so what: how/why are these ideas important? (see ) sentences that are clearly focused and in the active voice and present tense (week 8). cohesion within and between paragraphs to connect ideas for the reader (week 8). an essay that follows MLA for general paper formatting, in-text citations, and the Works Cited page (wee‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌k 8).
