One of the Engineering Grand Challenges is to “Make Solar Energy Economical”. Assume your team has been asked to organize a new department to provide solar-produced electricity to a large area in the Midwest. There are issues that need to be addressed: cost of materials, sourcing of materials, ability to deliver electricity 24/7 in all types of weather, reliability, etc.
Identify 3 issues that are most important that you will work on. Focus on the engineering management side, not the technical side (do not try to calculate how many square feet of solar cells are required or how many megawatts need to be produced). Consider the risks, including where solar panels will be sourced and how you will deliver reliable electricity at night and in all kinds of weather.
