Discuss on Previous research showed that cigarette smoking among adolescents increased fivefold between junior and senior high school. Categories of environmental influences have been suggested including social pressure from peers and the media and parent modeling of the behavior.
This research used a survey to ask junior high school youths from 11 to 14 years old what they believed about these issues. This survey was given during a six month period to students visiting the nurse’s office for their annual checkups. Depending on the answer that students gave to the question, “Do you smoke?” students were given one of two questionnaires. Students were asked about the influence of advertising, whether or not cigarette advertising should be banned, their knowledge of effects of cigarette smoking, and the presence of smokers in the family. If students had smoked, they were asked at what age they started and why.
The results showed that, out of a group of 100 students, about 12 percent participating in the study smoked. About 25 percent of smokers and nonsmokers believed that advertising significantly influenced the smoking behavior of their classmates or themselves. About 40 percent of smokers compared to 70 percent of nonsmokers believed that cigarette advertising should be banned. Overall, 90 percent of students recognized that smoking poses serious risks for the individual. While 53 percent of the respondents said parents taught them not to smoke, almost 50 percent of parents were smokers, and 75 percent of adolescent smokers had parents who smoked. The main reasons students gave for smoking were curiosity and peer pressure. The results showed that the smokers began to smoke by age 11 (three students), 12 (six students), 13 (one student), and 14 (two students). The results show that either this group of students showed a lower than average startup age, or the age at which adolescents begin smoking has decreased since the previous study.
