Write a chapter in letter-form in the voice of one of the characters: the creature, Victor Frankenstein, Elizabeth, Henry Clerval, Justine, Walton, Mrs. Saville, or another character in the text or of your own imagining. Your piece of writing should address the “what if?” question. For example, what if the body parts of the creature’s female companion were found, put together, and she came to life—what would her story be? What happens twenty, fifty, or one-hundred years after the novel ends? Is the creature still alive? What is his story? What happens to Walton? Does he meet the creature again? Does the creature end up tormenting Walton? Or was the creature’s remorse genuine and there developed a friendship between the creature and Walton? We don’t hear often from Elizabeth in the novel, write a letter in her voice (what if she knew about Victor’s creature?). We also don’t hear much from Henry Clerval – perhaps he knows something about Victor’s secret? Or perhaps you imagine another bigger and darker secret pertaining to the novel that Shelley does not get a chance to write about… Note: This is a creative writing assignment, so you have the liberty to be inventive and original in your plot. Please use vivid and concrete language in crafting your letter – use specific place names & character names. Do not provide back-story/summary of Shelley’s Frankenstein – begin your piece in the middle of the action. Each chapter/letter should be centered around conflict/tension – whether it is resolved or unresolved is up to you. Think about the motives, morals, and emotional mindset of the character whose voice you choose to use. What are this character’s eccentricities? Personality traits? Desires? Sentiments? What is the purpose of this letter?
