1. Identify a popular well known dietary program, fad diet, or eating style. Examples might
include the Caveman/Paleo diet, Keto diet, Grapefruit diet, any of the elimination diets,
Gluten free diet, organic foods only, or raw food diet.
2. Investigate the diet – consider websites promoting the diet and include at least one
science-based resource.
3. Answer the following questions (1-3 sentences each; you may use this as a worksheet to
record your answers):
a. Who is the intended audience for the diet? For some diets (such as the keto diet),
the original intended audience is not the same as the current, marketed audience.
Perhaps distinguish among the audiences.
b. What are the key principles of the diet? Is the rational for the principles
biologically plausible (as in reasonable given your understanding of the science)?
c. Is the diet nutritionally adequate…as in meeting all food groups in adequate
quantities according to Choose MyPlate®?
d. What are the purported benefits of the diet?
e. What are the risks of the diet? Consider safety, nutritional adequacy, compliance
likelihood, and cost.
