Here are the Essay/Project #2 questions:
Please describe in 3 detailed paragraphs, what exactly is your issue? (3 paras minimum.)
What made you decide to focus on this particular issue? (2 paras minimum.)
How does your issue relate to our Housing in Hayward project? (2 paras minimum.)
What need is being filled, or what problem is being addressed by your issue and why does it matter that the issue is addressed? (2 paras minimum.)
Who is the audience for your project? Why should this issue matter to them/ You should talk about 3 different audiences (It doesn’t work to say “everybody”–that usually means you have not focused deeply enough on your project details.) (3 paras minimum.)
What existing assets or resources in the community relate to your issue? (3 paras minimum.)
What solutions do you propose to deal with your issue? (3 paras minimum.)
How will people interact with your project? * You will answer this question if you are proposing a project. This is where you really get into detail about how your project actually functions. (3 paras minimum.)
Do not give short answers to these questions. All the questions require several paragraphs. You will build these paragraphs just like you did for essay #1— with 3-4-5 topic/sentences/quotes/commentary/quotes/commentary.
You will be using quotes in your paragraphs. (They actually will help the persuasiveness of the presentation. You can pull quotes from any interviews that you do or have done, the interviews on the spreadsheet, from internet sources, and from the Hayward City materials.)
The Essay/Project #2 page minimum is 16 pages. This should include at least 9 pages of your actual writing, along with 7 pages of title page, pictures, charts, graphs, break out quotes, etc. You should include pictures and design layouts in your Canva Presentation.
In addition, here are 2 links to information on the city of Hayward website that relates to Housing. Depending on the issue you have picked, you may find a lot of helpful information that you can integrate into your presentation. I recommend you spend some time checking these out. Even if you don’t see DIRECT information about YOUR issue, for sure you can get background information that you can integrate into your Canva presentation. You should really try to integrate quotes from these links into your writing. City of Hayward Housing information:
Hayward Housing and Climate Update:
We also developed 3 categories of issues. These categories are designed to help you get a sense of what direction your Canva presentation will take. Of course these categories have a lot in common. So don’t worry if your issues touch on more than one category. These are just designed to help kick start your ideas. Category of Issue:
Did you know: where you explore and explain an issue that people may not know about and that needs more awareness. Your job is to uncover aspects of the issue that may not be so obvious to others. You are like a detective, or a sociologist. You may not be offering solutions. You are more interested in exploring and uncovering the true and deeper nature of the issue.
Problem / solution: where you lay out a problem, and then you pose solutions for it. WIth this category, you may be offering multiple solutions, or resources, or alternatives, etc.
Project proposal; where you propose an activity or event for the community to address the issue that you picked. Projects almost always are an ANSWER to a problem, so if you are proposing a project, you will want to be sure to talk about the problem that is being addressed. With this category, you will need to offer a LOT of detail about your project. For example, you cannot just say you want to have a “cultural event.” That is WAY too general. You will need to be very specific and detailed about what you are planning.
Some things to keep in mind as you pick your issue.
Your issue must relate to our Housing in Hayward work.
Your writing must integrate quotes chosen from the over 350 raw transcriipts.
You may want to feature some of the people you have already interviewed. You can maybe include pics of them or of their neighborhood. You may want to tell more of their story (than you told in your essay) as it relates to your issue.
You may want to do more interviewing of people to get information for your issue.
