Part 1: Background/Setting: Compile child’s age (in months), location of observation, time of day, people present, and relationship to the observed. Also any other relevant info about the child, setting, etc. Part 2: Running Record: While watching the video you will write down everything you see the child doing. Everything possible (It’s not possible to capture EVERYTHING). Short hand notes. Be OBJECTIVE and DETAILED here. No judgements, interpretations or explanations. (That comes in the next section) Part 3: Interpretation: Now it is time to explain what you just observed. For this section there should be 3 parts (each domain gets its own paragraph) — Physical Development, Cognitive Development, and Psychosocial Development. Explain how the child is developing in each domain using the Top Ten concepts (Fine motor, gross motor, imitation, temperament, attachment, etc.) to support your explanation. Highlight or make bold any Top Ten Concept used. Part 4: Conclusion/Reflection: What are your final thoughts about the child? Is the child’s development on track? Are there any red flags? Recommendations for what the child might need? Other factors to explain the child’s behavior or what happened in the observation? What was your experience like observing the child?
