Write a half a page to a full page (500-100 words) commenting on the article in complete sentences

Words: 1175
Pages: 5
Subject: Uncategorized

Biology issue journal first article and comments
ARTICLE REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Must be from a
LOCAL newspaper. See Appendix A To
This Syllabus For Acceptable Publications. If your publication is not on the list, you
will get a “O” for the article and commentary on that article. There is an exception: if you
would like to use another publication check with me first to get permission.
Bring me an index card with the words: “I hereby grant permission to (your
name) to use (name of publication)” and a place for me to sign and date
it. You will then need to scan or
photograph that index card when you submit an article from that source.

2.
All articles MUST be published during the duration of
this course—no two-year-old articles, or even month-old articles,
any articles appearing before the first day of the semester will be accepted
(they will result in 0 for that article and comments about the article). You are to paste the ENTIRE article in your
journal neatly (or if it is a full-page print-out from an on-line
publication, three-hole punch it and include it in your notebook). I must be
able to read the full article–don’t
have 1/3rd of it in the fold so I can’t read it. If you do, you will
not get credit for the article or your commentary. You may fold the article
to fit on the 8/5 x 11 page just so I can easily unfold and see the entire
article. Some students mount their
articles on construction paper which is bigger and thus the constructions paper
goes in the fold not the article.

3.
THE ARTICLE
MUST BE ON A BIOLOGICAL SUBJECT (not on sports and not on other
sciences like Astronomy or Meteorology (weather)—make sure it pertains to
biology—the study of LIFE!

4.
These Must Be
Full Articles-Not Just Photo Captions Or Headlines—minimum of 4 full
paragraphs and at least 12 sentences.

5.
You must
provide the full URL (web address) for
the article or you will not get credit for the article or your comments.
Do not type the article (retype). You must give me the full URL of the article
with a hyperlink, so I can click on it and see the entire article in its
original form.

COMMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Write a half a page to a full page (500-100 words)
commenting on the article in complete sentences.
2. These
comments must be primarily YOUR thoughts on the article, not just a
summary or retelling of the story. If
you just write a summary, you will get a “O.”
At most one sentence or two sentences can summarize the article as an
intro, but 2/3 of the essay must be your commentary.
3.
COMMENTS MUST BE TYPED (do not scan or photograph
you handwritten comments—they will not be accepted).
4. These essays
must be written clearly and must be grammatically correct or points will be deducted. USE SPELL
AND GRAMMAR CHECK ON YOUR COMMENTS. This is a college course
and this is a take home assignment. Take
pride in your work and make sure you are handing in essays that reflect
college-level work. Grammatical and spelling errors will result in point
deductions.
5. Your
commentary must be on the biological aspects of the article and
clearly state your opinion and back it up.
6. Relate the
article to what we have studied or will be studying in class.
7. READ THE
ARTICLE. MISREPRESENTING FACTS
FROM THE ARTICLE WILL BE GROUNDS FOR DEDUCTING POINTS OR EVEN GIVING NO CREDIT
FOR THAT COMMENTARY. Any deviation
from these requirements will result a zero for the comments, and if systemic, a
“O” for the whole journal.

TABLE OF CONTENTS REQUIRED – which must be typed
and must be the first page on the inside of the journal fastened in the three
prongs (if loose the whole journal gets a “O”). The journal will not be graded
without a Table of Contents. I use it to
compute the grade. Without it the journal will get a “O.” See Appendix B or a template of how I want
you to set-up the Table of Contents. Like the comments, the Table of Contents
must be typed and set up like Appendix B or you will get a “O” for the entire
journal.

None of the
requirements covered in these guidelines can be considered waived unless you
get a signed statement from me indicating that is the case (it is very unlikely)
and in that case, you would have to put that statement in your journal to
remind me.
