Option #1: ALTERNATE FEDERAL BUDGET AND SUMMARY
Students are to develop an alternate Federal Budget. Using the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) website, (http://www.policyalternatives.ca/build-better-budget) students will design a personalized alternate federal budget. Students will review the available alterations to the budget and decide from the choices available which additions they want to make. Students will limit themselves to four changes/alterations. Of the four, you will only be able to introduce three new initiatives (additional expenditures) and only one tax increase. Students must not run a deficit in the third year of the budget. I will demonstrate this process in class. Once complete, students will print a copy of their personal budget. The copy will be submitted on the due date along with a minimum 5-6 page summary of the budget. The summary will be marked (50 marks) using the following criteria:
Justification for each selection made. Include at least one academic source of information for each new budget expenditure that provides evidence of the value of the new initiative. As well, include at least one source of information that supports the reasoning behind your introduction of a new tax in your alternate budget. (Note: sources of information must be from outside of the required readings for the course and not research based news posts). (20 marks)
A discussion about the implications your budget had on unemployment. If a decrease occurred tell me why this might be. If unemployment increased, is this a choice you are willing to make and why? (5 marks)
A discussion of what other changes would you have liked to have made but werent able to?
