1. In what way did President Andrew Jackson’s United States reflect the democratic ideals of the time? Does it appear from the evidence in Chapter 10 that Andrew Jackson was the cause or the recipient of the democratization of American politics? Explain.
2. One of the most divisive aspects of Andrew Jackson’s presidency was his handling of the bank war. From your reading about the national bank (both the First and Second Banks) of the United States in Chapter 10 and previous chapters, does it appear that Jackson acted wisely to defend the American people from an undemocratic institution or was he foolish in destroying the bank?
3. Of great controversy to this day is the removal of the Indians from east of the Mississippi to the Indian Territory in the west. Does it appear from Chapter 10 that President Jackson was alone in wishing to remove the Indians or was he just one of many? What are some suggestions as to more constructive ways Congress and the president could have acted regarding this issue?
