Assignment 2: ‘Idea’ Generation (30%) – Individual Project
In the process of researching Assignment 1: Opportunity Spotting, you should each have a pretty good idea of what is happening in the hospitality and tourism industry. If you received feedback on the first assignment suggesting you need to further improve Assignment 1, then do so prior to starting Part 2 of the term assignment (i.e. Assignment 2).
Assignment 2 is an individual assignment, based on Assignment 1. HOWEVER, to complete this assignment successfully, groups from Assignment 1 need to meet for a short informal meeting. Please read the instructions carefully to avoid confusion.
Individual Assignment – Journal
Module 05 has three weeks devoted to it. Over the three-week period, students are to progressively work toward applying the 9 techniques for generating ideas from the Module 05 lesson. Given the nature of this task, and time allocated to it, the expectation is for students to submit a journal entry for EACH technique OVER the three-week period (rather than all at once). Journal entries do not have to be submitted in the same order as techniques are presented in the lesson.
NOTE: To complete technique 9, students will need to set up a meeting (virtual is fine) with their team members from Assignment 1. During their meeting, students are asked to share experiences using techniques 1 through 8 and share any of the ideas generated through the process of using the 8 techniques. Once the team meeting is complete, students can finalize their entry.
Journal entries are intended for students to document their individual experience and journey using the techniques to generate innovative ideas based on Assignment 1. Each entry should be about 350-500 words, and should focus on questions like:
How long did you use the technique for? Days? Weeks?
Describe your experience using the technique?
What ideas were generated when using the technique?
Did you modify the technique in any way? If so, why?
What were the results of using the technique? What ideas did it help generate?
What did you think of the technique? How did it work? How did you feel? Did you find it useful?
What challenges arose when using the technique? What might mitigate those challenges?
Note:
Some techniques require more time than others to implement so approach this task thoughtfully
Some techniques (ones involving priming the mind) will be used throughout the process, simultaneously with other techniques
* Once individual entries are complete, students should draft a culminating reflection, capturing students’ overall experience of using the creativity techniques for idea generation.
Journals will be reviewed after the assignment due date and will be graded based on: completeness (all techniques were attempted), progressive exploration (i.e. evidence techniques were used over a period of time), engagement (i.e. evidence that the student engaged with the technique in a meaningful way), ideas, evidence of critical thought and analysis (i.e. student demonstrates thought about technique, its usage, benefits, pros and cons) and writing style (professionalism, flow, spelling, grammar, flow, etc.).
