Dave
Garber wrote this during the Lenten season in his commentary on Ezekiel 37 for
“Working Preacher.”
We
can often turn it (the story of the valley of dry bones) into a promise for new
life on individual and communal levels without taking seriously the situations
and circumstances that have led to the initial death. As is the temptation in
every Lenten season, we might look forward so fervently to the reanimation of
the bones that we rush forward to the glory of resurrection Sunday without
considering the trauma of the preceding week. While celebrating the victory
over death, we refuse to evaluate the systems, patterns, and consequences of
our walk through the valley of its shadow.
As
you read the books of Ezekiel and The Twelve, how do you think the prophets and
the people hearing the prophetic words would react to Dr. Garber’s words
“we might look forward so fervently to the reanimation of the bones that
we rush forward to the glory of resurrection Sunday without considering the
trauma of the preceding week”?
You
need only cite the readings and lectures on Ezekiel for this discussion, but
you could find some helpful information in the lectures and readings on
Jeremiah.
