Learning Goal: The objective of this assignment is to focus on the fault that is the most hazardous for the UC Berkeley campus and synthesize the concepts learned thus far about it. We are looking, first and foremost, for you to demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and in moderate detail about the Hayward Fault. Target concepts include how the fault moves and its tectonic context, how we can see the fault on the surface, the size of earthquake it is capable of, some potential consequences of such an event, and how the fault interacts with or influences structures on campus and beyond. You do not need to cover everything – pick a handful of ideas to explore. Format: Get creative! While you are absolutely allowed to write a standard academic report if you prefer, we have designed this assignment to be a creative project, so you can pick the medium that is most engaging for you. The content can be delivered as brochures, news cast videos, raps, short stories, artwork…. For the sake of our graders, whatever you turn in should take no longer than 8 minutes to consume or be limited to 750 words. If you have a project idea you′re not sure about, attend a GSI office hour and we will be happy to give you feedback. Submit written documents as pdf Submit audio as mp3 Submit video as mp4 or mov You can also upload audio/visual media to YouTube, Vimeo, or SoundCloud and provide the link Your work should explain things as if you are communicating with someone who is unfamiliar with the material. Imagine you are teaching your family or friends about the Hayward Fault, or making a presentation to the public. You may also pair up with one other student to complete this project, if you like. Unless the workload distribution is very well documented, both students will receive the same grade. Our expectations also will be a little higher to reflect that two people contributed instead of one, and you may submit something a little lengthier (10 minutes instead of 8 or 1000 words instead of 750). Your partner does not have to be from your GSI group. IMPORTANT: one student should submit the project to bCourses with both names on it. The other student must submit a text box entry explaining you did a paired project and giving the name, Section, and Student ID of the student who submitted it, so your grader knows where to look for your work. Grading: You will be graded dominantly on factual accuracy, not the quality of your art. We are looking for knowledge and critical comprehension.
