Summarize the plot of the play so far. What tensions or conflicts between or within characters contribute to and complicate the rising action? In what way do these conflicts seem to result from forces beyond the characters’ control: upbringing, for example; racial prejudice; poverty–from fate, if you will? To what degree might you blame some sort of tragic flaw in a character?
Bono says, “Some people build fences to keep people out . . . and other people build fences to keep people in” (Wilson 1157). What does the image of the fence seem to symbolize? How do other images serve as metaphors in the play: Garbriel’s fruits and flowers, or his key, or his trumpet? The setting of Troy’s house and yard? The game of baseball?
