Case: Performance predicament
The Solar Systems is an established company comprised of mostly IT Technicians. Recently, the company was working on a big project with a fast-approaching deadline. James is an IT Technician at Solar Systems who is regarded as a top performer, executing all his job duties and responsibilities timely and efficiently and consistently exceeding expectations. Denise, James’ manager, asked James to work overtime to help with the completion of the project. However, James refused, noting that working overtime was not included in his job expectations and requirements. The week after the project was finished, Denise completed James’ performance evaluation using a rating scale and rated James much lower than expected. James thinks the rating scale is unfair since he got a lower than usual performance evaluation which he believes is because he refused to work overtime. James is now asking for a clear justification for his lower rating.
