Context: Non-fictional works create a sense of authenticity that can’t quite be replicated in fiction. While fiction offers escape, non-fiction leans more to a sense of nostalgia and/or a deeper understanding. Works such as these also lead introspection. It is in this type of prose where authors have to be careful with the themes they interject in their writing. Non-fiction as a way of persuading its readership and the themes represented in these works tend to be powerful.
Purpose and Audience: The purpose of this assignment is to have you look at non-fictional prose from a critical/academic lens rather than one from a leisure/consumer lens. By looking at the causation of the themes at are expressed in the work, you will gain a greater understanding of the catalyst and creative process that births pieces that have lasted throughout time.
Instructions: You will compose a one-thousand (1000) word essay that analyzes and compares the themes of two non-fictional pieces from this module’s readings.
“No Name Woman” pg. 986
“1 Corinthians 13” pg. 985
“Salvation” pg. 282
“Pop Art” pg. 290
You will also identify the era in which the authors were living when they wrote their pieces and how the events of those timeframes may have influenced the themes they incorporated in their work. You will need to do a small amount of research to acquire the information regarding the era the authors lived in.
