Describe the shift in Elizabeth throughout the novel. Explain how this gradual evolution of her relationship with Darcy affected her with regard to her “conceited independence” (as described by Miss Bingley in chapter 8). At the end of the novel do you think that Elizabeth retains this independence or has she subjugated herself to a man? Why do you believe this? How does Elizabeth’s journey throughout the novel relate to the idea that women have to marry to be happy?
