The Right Fit
Christine worked as the front office assistant for Dr. Gary Nelson, a busy general practitioner. Christine had been employed there for just two weeks, but she already knew she wanted to become a medical assistant because it paid more than her current position and because the medical assistants moved about and interacted with the patients. In her position, Christine remained at the front desk to answer the phone, pull files, and make copies of insurance cards. She was unable to leave the front desk area unless she was going to the restroom or to lunch. Christine was very personable and outgoing and liked working with people. She realized, however, that she had to acquire the technical skills needed to be a medical assistant, so she enrolled in the medical assisting program at a college close to the office, so she could attend classes after work.
On her first day of class, the instructor, Mrs. Cook, reviewed the requirements of the program and then asked, “Are there any questions?”
Christine raised her hand. “Is it possible to be a medical assistant without drawing blood or giving shots? Needles make me pretty queasy.”
Mrs. Cook smiled and replied, “Not if you’re going to be a good medical assistant!” Both Mrs. Cook and Christine realized that perhaps medical assisting wasn’t the right career for Christine. In her heart, Christine realized she did not have the stomach to perform the necessary procedures required for those working as medical assistants.
After class was over, Christine asked Mrs. Cook if she could talk with her for a moment because she was considering dropping out of the program. When Mrs. Cook asked Christine why she wanted to become a medical assistant, Christine told her about her current job. She explained how she wanted to make more

money, move about the office during the day, and interact more with the public.
“Mrs. Cook,” Christine said, “honestly, I’m a little discouraged. I like interacting with people and I like the medical field, but I just don’t think I can perform all the duties that you said medical assistants have to do, specifically the blood work.”
“Don’t be discouraged,” said Mrs. Cook. “I think I might know of a better career fit for you, and the program for it is also offered here. You would still be able to work in a fast-paced, medical setting. If you apply yourself, your earning potential will be greater than it is now. You can use your people skills, and you will be able to move about the office. The best part is you won’t have to handle any needles!” They both laughed.
