Module 5 Response Paper Prompt
Compare and contrast the way that Karl Marx and Mikhail Bakunin describe the Paris
Commune. Detail the link between each man’s discussion of this event and their broader
theories. Make sure to include the points about which these thinkers agree as well as the main
source of their disagreement. In order to answer these questions, rely on passages from all three
of the following works: After the Revolution: Marx Debates Bakunin, The Civil War in France,
and Bakunin’s The Paris Commune and the Idea of the State.
Note: I do not expect you to have read any more of Bakunin’s work than what Marx responds to
in After the Revolution: Marx Debates Bakunin and his own words in The Paris Commune and
the Idea of the State. These works should be sufficient enough to respond to this prompt.

choose. Make sure to properly cite them using MPA, APA, or Chicago style citations. However,
outside sources are not necessary for this response paper.
Make sure your response paper is at least 800 words long, but no longer than 1600 words.
Use 12 pt. Times New Roman font and normal margins for this assignment. You may single or
double space your work (or even 1.5 space if you prefer).
