During the veterinary science course and throughout your career you will be
confronted with situations that challenge not only your level of skill and
knowledge but also your ethics and values. You will have to think about your
values and opinions on these confronting issues and your preconceived ideas before advising a client on the best course of action to maintain and enhance animal and human health. It is important for you to be aware of the many different views of your profession, your future clients and society in general.

Below are a list of questions for you to answer. Research your answers and
demonstrate your understanding by writing the answers to the questions in your own words. Whilst it is important to use excellent writing skills there is a very
strict word limit for this section of the case study i.e. 500-1000 words
(note figures, tables, references, and headings are not included in the word limit).
Horses have no choice in whether they are associated with eventing. Discuss the range of attitudes within society that might exist in relation to the
appropriateness of putting horses through the rigours of these events essentially for the benefit of the riders and owners of horses.
In your answer, explore some of the potential animal welfare issues associated with horses participating in eventing.

When answering the “attitudes” question we would like you to go through the following steps.

Individually; write down what your thoughts/attitudes are with respect to the attitudes question.
Discuss within your group the thoughts/attitudes/issues of all group members.
Try and identify, and discuss any other attitudes/issues that might exist within a normal population of clients of a typical veterinary practice.

Reflect upon the discussions and try to identify the appropriate professional response-attitudes to the aspects of the case discussed.

Following discussion with fellow students and further research on the topic has your attitude changed? Why?
This component of the case study is an individual report and should take the form of a short essay (500 -1000 words) in which you should discuss the following:
a.
b.
The range of attitudes within society with respect to using horses in eventing.

Your own beliefs, where these beliefs may have originated, how they have

changed and why.

The perspectives, (ethics and values), of other students, the veterinary

profession and society.
Some of the potential animal welfare aspects of horses participating in eventing.
