Did you know that nearly every state has established fatality review teams? According to the below article dated February 2021, Alaska is planning to establish one, as well. Since Alaska has not yet established it’s team, we’re going to talk about Montana’s teams in this discussion assignment. Montana was the first state in the nation to establish a Native American Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team (separate from their Montana Fatality Review Commission) to understand what leads to domestic violence fatalities in Montana’s Indian Country and to recommend culturally sensitive, proactive changes to prevent domestic violence fatalities in the future.
As current and/or future criminal justice and social science practitioners, you may know someone on these teams or become a member yourself. Upon review of these materials what are three things you found important about Domestic Violence Fatality Review Teams? Why did you find them important? How might they connect with your current or prospective career?
