The research paper should analyze the historicity (that is, the extent to which it represents an accurate and justifiable portrayal of the individuals, events, and periods represented) One criterion for the paper’s grade will be your initiative in finding historical sources, primary and/or secondary, to use – and properly cite – in evaluating the film’s historicity. The important thing to remember is that you’ll be doing the same type of thing in your paper that I do in my brief presentations during Recitations: Describe the film’s creators, characters, and plot; Set the events depicted in the film in historical context; And then evaluate the extent to which the film is historically accurate, analyze why it might not be in certain respects, and evaluate its overall success as a way to understand the events and era, including explaining why departures from the historical record may or may not be justifiable for dramatic purposes. It’s a research paper, so you should look at outside resources to critique the film on these grounds.
